On August 9, 2015, The Wave was installed on Governor’s Island, one of New York City’s hottest new arts venues located in the middle of New York Harbor, as part of Shmita Artfest, a day-long, interactive festival celebrating environmental activism and Jewish learning. Shmita ArtFest was sponsored by Art Kibbutz, an International Jewish Artist Colony, based in New York.
For a period of four hours, hundreds of participants in the festival as well as visitors exploring the island’s historic architecture and 30 acres of park and public open space created individual pieces for the installation, which ultimately ‘traveled’ from the summer residency headquarters of Art Kibbutz onto the expansive lawn in front of the facility. Many of the participants also contributed their thoughtful comments on water and its meaning to them as a vital resource. Included below are just a few samples.
